The HSA is one of the NGOs regularly asked by Government and other organisations, including industry, to scrutinize and comment on various subjects; the main ones being new legislation, proposed changes to existing legislation and welfare at slaughter standards. Responding to these consultations is some of the most important work undertaken by the HSA, albeit low-profile compared to other efforts.

HSA CEO Dr Huw Golledge appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Farming Today programme this morning (12 Feb 2021) to discuss HSA-funded research into Low Atmospheric Pressure Stunning (LAPS), carbon dioxide (CO2) and the continued search for a more humane alternative for stunning pigs.

The HSA’s Technical Director, Charlie Mason, gave a virtual presentation to an audience of over 31,000 people as part of the Challenges of Animal Protection and Welfare in the Context of Covid-19 Pandemic seminar organised by the China Biodiversity Conservation & Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) based in Beijing.

The HSA was delighted to be one of 16 organisations giving talks and presentations at the 2020 Scottish Smallholder Festival, Scotland’s largest smallholder event, celebrating the best of Scottish smallholding, growing and craft.

HSA’s Annual Report for 2019-20, which has just been published, recognises the charity’s largest programme of research – an award of £1.93 million for research and development to improve the welfare of fish, crustaceans and cephalopods at slaughter.
