UFAW and HSA support new Veterinary Manifesto
10 September 2020
and its sister charity, the Humane Slaughter Association, are pleased to add their support to new evidence-based veterinary medicine manifesto which sets out how veterinary professionals and other stakeholders should act to improve evidence-based veterinary medicine.
The manifesto highlights the importance of making research evidence relevant, replicable and accessible to the end users – namely vets, vet nurses, owners, farmers, professional organisations and policymakers amongst others. It also calls for education in evidence-based healthcare for professionals, policymakers and the public to enable them to make informed decisions.
Dr Huw Golledge, CEO and Scientific Director for both UFAW and the HSA said: “Animal Welfare is a branch of science and the mission of both UFAW and the HSA is to make improvements to animal welfare through a rigorous science-based approach. As such, we are strong advocates of evidence-based veterinary medicine since implementation of animal welfare improvements often rests with the veterinary profession. I am therefore delighted to join other like-minded organisations in endorsing the excellent initiative from the Vet record.”
Susanne Jarvis, Managing Editor for the Veterinary Record and the BMJ publishing group said: “Using a more evidence-based approach for veterinary practice is important, as it allows clinicians to make better decisions for their patients and reduces the use of ineffective and unnecessary treatments. It can also help inform policymakers and highlight gaps in knowledge and research.”
