HSA speaks at AMI’s 50th Annual Seminar
18 September 2015
The Association of Meat Inspectors Trust (AMI) invited HSA’s Technical Director, Charlie Mason, and Technical Officer Jade Spence to speak at its 50th Annual Seminar which was held 11-13th September at Harper Adams University, Shropshire.
The Association, which works to advance education in the knowledge and practice of meat inspection and hygiene, had delegates come from all over the UK, parts of Europe and Hong Kong to attend the seminar, including representation from the European Working Community for Food Inspection and Consumer Protection (EWFC) and the Food Standards Agency.
The HSA’s Technical Officer Jade Spence gave a well received presentation on new and emerging methods of stunning, including a new type of electrical stunning called SPUC (Single Pulse Ultra-high Current). In 2015 the HSA awarded funding for further SPUC research to be carried out at the University of Bristol. The three-year project aims to develop a humane, safe and Halal-compliant method of pre-cut stunning for cattle. Said Jade: “Non-stun slaughter is an on-going concern of many meat inspectors and vets as well as the general public and several delegates remarked that they were pleased to hear that a possible humane alternative to non-stun Halal slaughter of cattle was being investigated.”
The HSA ran a stand at the event and the seminar gave the team a wonderful opportunity to share information and views on evolving practices with regard to animal welfare at slaughter. Added Charlie: “Members were interested to know what the HSA’s current activities are and what scientific research was taking place.”
