HSA 2024 Special Travel Award (up to £10,000)

The HSA seeks to help those involved in improving animal welfare during transport, marketing or at slaughter to gain new expertise and knowledge which contributes to better animal welfare. To support this aim, the HSA is making funds of up to £10,000 (in total) available to support travel and subsistence expenses for short-term, technical and/or scientific visits to appropriate institutions and/or commercial operations.    


This travel award will allow the successful applicant(s) to visit a centre, or centres, of excellence or expertise to further their technical knowledge and/or to foster scientific collaboration. The award may be used to support multiple visits within a specific country or region during a single trip. The award will cover reasonable travel and subsistence expenses up to a maximum of £10,000.  


The application should include:  

  • Details of the travel to be undertaken (institutions visited etc)  
  • Activities that will be undertaken  
    (observation of good practice, training courses, participation in research etc)  
  • Knowledge that will be acquired  
  • How the knowledge will be applied and disseminated on return  
  • The animal welfare benefits of the proposed visit(s) 
  • Specific reasons why you are well-placed to undertake this project 

Eligibility 
Applications will be accepted from candidates at any academic institution, research institute, non-governmental organisation, or private company that can perform independent scientific studies. 
 
We can support work on any species farmed for food, this includes farmed fish and other aquatic species. 
 
Application Procedure 
Applications must be made using the online application form (see link below). 

The deadline for applications is 22 January 2024. 

The aim to notify the successful candidate by mid-February 2024, and the travel must be completed before 31 December 2024
